About the competition - Painting and Decorating - Closed

Competitors will undertake a series of practical tests based on the workplace which will demonstrate their abilities and highlight their outstanding skills in the painting and decorating industry.

Competition structure

Stage one: SkillBuild 2010 heats – 16 competition heats take place across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales (competitions in Northern Ireland are organised by Skillbuild NI) during April to June 2010. A list of regional heats will be published online from mid October. Enter online from January www.cskills.org/skillbuild. Closing date is 19 March 2010.

Competitors have to complete a specific project designed to challenge their ability to follow detailed instructions, produce accurate and neat work outputs, be economical with materials while working to strict timescales – all essential requirements for today’s construction industry.

For Painting & Decorating there are two levels of entry; New Entrant level and Senior level.

- New Entrant level is for those trainees in Year 1 of their qualification
- Senior level is for those trainees in Year 2 or later of their qualification


Stage two: highest scoring competitors across all heats that meet the required standard will be invited to compete at the SkillBuild 2010 UK final over a three day national event in September 2010.

In the spirit of SkillBuild, the national final is an opportunity for all involved to celebrate excellence in construction training.

How many can enter?

Three entries per organisation. This includes both new and senior entrants.

Who can enter?

This competition is intended for those working or training in the construction industry. Each competition can be entered by apprentices and those on full-time courses that lead to technical certificates.

Intermediate: Those undertaking qualifications up to level 2 (for England, Northern Ireland and Wales), up to level 5 (for Scotland) or up to three years experience in a working environment. This is equivalent to: new entrant level.

Advanced: Those undertaking qualifications up to level 3 (for England, Northern Ireland and Wales), up to level 6 (for Scotland) or up to five years experience in a working environment. This is equivalent to: senior level.
