About the competition - Welding - Closed

The competition is designed to meet employers’ expectations and requirements that apply throughout the welding industry. The competition tests the competitor’s performance in a selection of tasks drawn from the role of a welder at BS EN 287 (or equivalent) level.

Competition structure

There are no restrictions on how many competitors can be entered into the regional competition from each organisation.

Stage one: This competition is now closed.

Stage two: competitors will be invited to participate in a live heat.

Stage three: highest scoring competitors across all heats that meet the required standard will be invited to compete at the UK final.

How many can enter?

There are no restrictions on the number of competitors that can be entered.

Assessment criteria

- The interpretation of welding procedures and instructions
- Equipment set up
- Final preparation of welding joint geometries in carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium
- The completion of a defined weld in the above materials

Subject to demand, there will be one-day heats held at regional centres across the UK, followed by a three day UK final held at TWI in Great Abington near Cambridge.

Who can enter?

The competition is intended for those training in welding. Competitors should be working towards award body courses and/or service courses.

Advanced: Those undertaking qualifications up to level 3 (for England, Northern Ireland and Wales), up to level 6 (for Scotland) or up to five years experience in a working environment.

Further opportunities

There is a City & Guilds qualification available for this competition.

There is the possibility of progressing to an International WorldSkills competition.
