Engage the standards

This page details the WorldSkills Occupational Standards (WSOS), specifying the knowledge, understanding, and skills that underpin international best practices in technical and vocational performance. These standards embody a shared global perspective on the work roles and occupations they represent in industry and business, supporting the preparation of students and apprentices for international competitions.

To assist educators in further and higher technical education, we have developed a suite of WorldSkills UK National Standards of Excellence, designed to bridge the gap between UK and international standards.

A: 3D Modelling and Sculpting

What does competence look like in this area?

  • the triangle sizes are even across the whole model, ensuring that there is an effective approach to the   use of triangles on the mesh as needed
  • edgeflow is sympathetic with the object’s shape
  • lines of the mesh should flow around the mesh and not end abruptly
  • no flipped normals present
  • the object is understood in perspective view from all angles – with no textures on the mesh so you should still be able to understand what it is
  • the asset closely resembles the art style
  • sculpt model has little or no details
  • some basic sculpting has been attempted.

What does excellence look like in this area?

  • equitable use of triangles that reduce tris on areas that need less. Key areas that need more tris are utilised and where less can be used (large areas) they are used
  • edge flow has no mis-turned edges
  • the asset accentuates the art style
  • the silhouette holds up to 360-degree scrutiny, i.e. view the asset in 360 so that it can still be identified
  • sculpt model has good details with good considerations of where details are appropriate and required
  • good details sculpt applied to the low poly version to enhance details.

B: Texturing

What does competence look like in this area?

  • base colour for the asset is appropriate for the overall model or is plan grey
  • texture seams are barely evident on geometry
  • close attention is given to ensuring that seams are not visible on the asset
  • the texture closely resembles the art style
  • a normal map is used to describe extra detail; this can be created in Photoshop or Substance Suite
  • little texture details such as dirt nor wear and tear etc can be seen
  • to show that the asset has a back story.

What does excellence look like in this area?

  • base colours chosen are appropriate for each material element
  • majority of textures have been created with Substance Suite
  • texture seams are not present or hidden with geometry
  • careful attention applied to ensure no breaks in textures are evident
  • the texture accentuates the art style, e.g. such as photo realistic or stylised art
  • four or more materials have been created, such as wood, glass, rubber, metals
  • opacity map used to accentuate damage of cloth and organic opacity map used effectively.
