Jason Scott will be representing Team UK in Robot Systems Integration at WorldSkills Lyon alongside his teammate Charlie, competing against top talent from around the world.

Charlie and Jason earned a Medallion of Excellence at EuroSkills Gdańsk 2023. Jason said, “I’m super proud of our achievement! Being on Squad UK since the WorldSkills UK National Finals 2022 has been an amazing experience. I’ve loved meeting everyone through Squad and Team UK.”

Before his WorldSkills UK journey, Jason undertook a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering focusing on Electrical and Electronic at Northern Regional College. When asked why he chose a BTEC, Jason said, “School didn’t offer the hands-on experience that college did. I wanted to master my skills and work with machines. Engineering is a hands-on skill, and you need to be able to work with your hands and understand how machines work; otherwise, you won’t truly understand what’s happening. My BTEC has made me stand out and has helped me in my current role.”

When asked what it means to be selected for Team UK, Jason said, “WorldSkills UK has recognised my hard work, and I’m thrilled that Charlie and I have been chosen to represent the UK. It’s an incredible opportunity to experience a major event and showcase our skills on the world stage.” Jason continued, “Charlie and I knew each other from school, but it was WorldSkills UK that truly cemented our partnership, so going to WorldSkills Lyon will be brilliant to see how far we have come.”

Jason also mentioned, “My family are so chuffed for me, and everyone has been incredibly supportive. When I mention it’s the Skills Olympics, people really understand what it means to me. My mum and dad, who have been my biggest supporters from the start, are coming over to cheer Charlie and me on. My employer, AES Global, has also been very accommodating by allowing time off and supporting my training.”

Regarding his preparation for WorldSkills Lyon, Jason said, “I train once a week and do a lot of extra practice in my spare time. I’ve attended international pressure tests to get used to the competition environment. Charlie and I frequently discuss strategies and potential challenges we might face.”

Jason added that WorldSkills UK has allowed him to explore different disciplines within his company. After WorldSkills Lyon, Jason hopes to continue his learning and is looking to complete a university degree in mechanical engineering. However, before that, Jason will be moving to Denmark next year.

When asked what he is most looking forward to, Jason said, “I’m excited to fully experience this massive event, show off my skills, and hopefully win a medal while representing my country.”

Would he recommend WorldSkills UK to others? “In a heartbeat! The knowledge and skills you gain are invaluable. Even at the national level, the experience helps you stand out compared to your peers,” Jason said.
