Being globally connected is fundamental to a major nation’s development and outlook. As a member organisation of the WorldSkills network, comprising over 80 peer organisations from around the world, thinking globally is central to our own work at WorldSkills UK.

Since my return from Kazan, Russia I have been asked a few times to write something about the experience I had at the biennial WorldSkills event.

Amazing. There is not a better word I can think of to sum up the past couple of weeks which saw the Skills Olympics take place in Kazan, Russia. It was a spectacular global celebration of young people and skills that will live long in the memory of all who attended.

As a past competitor and Assistant Training Manager for Worldskills UK in brickwork, when my employer said they would support my trip to Kazan for the World final, as they understand the reciprocal benefits of me being there, I jumped at the opportunity.

I came to Kazan as an official observer in my role as Deputy Chair of WSUK. I was also a speaker at the global conference. I expected to once again be “blown away” by the personal and technical attributes of the members of ‘Team UK’!

The WorldSkills competitions certainly need more publicity in the UK. Before I went to Kazan, the members of my Livery Company (the Plaisterers) knew about it as we have been supporting WorldSkills for some time. Some of the 110 other Livery Companies know about it as they support their respective skills in the competition or at Colleges. However outside of that there is no real visibility.

I travelled to Kazan for the Worldskills competition 2019 in anticipation of understanding the emphasis and value that other nations place on skills development and the benefit of competitions as a tool to inspire young people to engage in vocational training.

From 2,000 miles away here in Kazan, Russia, I would like to congratulate all those students receiving their GCSE results today.
