Charlie discovered Robot Systems Integration through Northern Regional College. “I gave it a go and found it quite enjoyable. I got good at it, so I kept going,” he recalls. Now, as a mechanical manufacturing engineering student at university, Charlie’s journey is a testament to dedication and growth.

Charlie’s involvement with WorldSkills UK began at Northern Regional College. Encouraged to participate in college competitions, he progressed through regional and national finals in 2022, ultimately winning gold. At EuroSkills, Charlie earned a Medal of Excellence, highlighting his exceptional talent.

Charlie decided to pursue a BTEC Level 3 in Engineering after leaving high school, stating, “I didn’t like the format of sitting exams and preferred being practical. Doing my BTEC helped my interest in robotics and WorldSkills UK competitions, enabling me to progress further to university.” Charlie added, “I recommend a BTEC to anyone, especially if you are looking for something practical.”

When asked about being selected for Team UK, Charlie expressed, “For me, it’s an honour. Being chosen means you’re the best in the country at that moment. It’s proof that you’ve excelled and are at the top of your game.”

Charlie also shared, “My family and friends are all very happy and excited for me. They’re thrilled to see me embarking on this journey independently.”

We asked Charlie what his schedule looks like between now and WorldSkills Lyon. Charlie said he is training twice a week, often at the college, with his teammate Jason, and has some exciting training sessions coming up in Romania with other competitors from around the world. Charlie did say “The toughest obstacle has been getting used to the demanding schedule,” he admits. “But it’s worth it in the end. The training has given me so much more confidence in myself and what I’m doing.”

“I used to be very shy and didn’t speak to many people. I would have stayed on my own most of the time, but I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people through WorldSkills UK,” Charlie reflects.

Once he completes his degree, Charlie’s plans to take his experience into the workplace. “I’d love to get a job in robotics and automation and work abroad,” Charlie said.

We asked Charlie what he is most looking forward to at WorldSkills Lyon. Charlie said, “I’m eager for the new experiences and challenges that WorldSkills Lyon will bring and showcasing my skills and learning from others,” he says.
