Daniel Knox, a 22 year old from Enniskillen in Northern Ireland has gone from apprentice to one of the best electricians in the world in only two years.

Encouraged to enter Northern Ireland’s inter college skills competitions by his lecturer at South West College, Daniel found his niche in competing.  He progressed to the WorldSkills UK National Competitions in Electrical Installations and was invited to join the international training programme for WorldSkills Lyon.

Daniel’s passion for his skill is clear for all to see, but when he was at school and looking at career options, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do.  Daniel explains:

“I suppose I knew I wanted to get into a trade, university wasn’t the right route for me, but I wasn’t sure which one.  Over the holidays I set up work experience in different areas and I found I really enjoyed Electrical Installation.”

Daniel adds “I would say to other young people considering their next career steps, always do your own research and choose what is right for you.”

Daniel secured an apprenticeship with electrical contractor and security system installer, GP Electrical and Security LTD and completed his training at South West College.

It is the ongoing developments in technology related to electrical installations that interests Daniel.  He says there is always something new to learn and this creates opportunities to keep developing his skills.

Participation in WorldSkills UK Competitions has also provided Daniel with a unique opportunity to develop his skills and knowledge further, while also providing him with insight into how electrical tasks are carried out around the world. As part of his preparation for WorldSkills Lyon 2024, Daniel headed to Abu Dhabi to undertake training and he also took part in EuroSkills Gdańsk last year, where he was recognised for reaching the European standard in Electrical Installation.

“I can’t wait to get out to Lyon and start competing.  The Olympics have fired me up and I know all the sacrifices I have made to train will be worth it” explains Daniel.  He says WorldSkills Lyon will be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
