Isaac grew up in Rathfriland, Newry, Northern Ireland, and is currently fully employed at Monkeywood. He began his journey with an apprenticeship at Southern Regional College in furniture and cabinet making, where his teacher encouraged him to participate in the WorldSkills UK regional and national heats. Winning the national competition earned Isaac a place on Squad UK. He also had the opportunity to compete at EuroSkills Gdańsk 2023, narrowly missing a medallion by three marks. Reflecting on the experience, Isaac said, “This was a great learning experience and made me determined to succeed at WorldSkills Lyon.”
Isaac feels it’s a “real privilege to be selected.” He said, “I feel very honoured to represent my country and Northern Ireland. I’m the first competitor from Northern Ireland in furniture and cabinet making, which makes it extra special.”
We asked Isaac what his family thinks of the news. He shared, “My family is very excited, especially my mum. She is very happy, and they are all heading over to Lyon to cheer me and the rest of Team UK on.” Isaac’s employer, Monkeywood, is also very supportive. Isaac said, “They have been great at accommodating extra time off for my training.”
Isaac is fully committed to his training, saying, “I am putting everything into it now. I’m training six days a week while juggling my 40-hour-a-week job.” His dedication has taken him to Switzerland and Taiwan for training with other competitors. To optimise his training, Isaac made the significant life choice to move to England for six months.
“Being part of WorldSkills UK has definitely helped me in my progression,” Isaac said. “Not only have my physical skills improved, but I’ve also become more confident in my own abilities. I now see a job through from understanding the planning and preparation that goes into it. WorldSkills UK has exposed me to different processes within my industry, giving me a wider skill set.”
Once WorldSkills Lyon is over, Isaac plans to return home and start his own bespoke furniture business, remaining open to opportunities that will help him continue developing his skills. When asked what he’s looking forward to most, Isaac joked, “The final day!” He added, “I am looking forward to it all. EuroSkills Gdańsk 2023 gave me a taste of what’s to come at WorldSkills Lyon, so I’m really looking forward to soaking up the atmosphere over the whole week. And being there with the rest of Team UK, it’s nice to be with people who are all experiencing the same feelings and to help motivate each other.”
Isaac’s advice to others considering getting involved with WorldSkills UK: “Go for it! However, you need to have the passion for it and be willing to sacrifice other things. The reward at the end is incredibly fulfilling.”
