Sam competed in the WorldSkills UK Mechatronics competition – he now works for Toyota Manufacturing UK, and helps current apprentices hone their skills.
Sam competed at the national competitions for four years in mechatronics and is currently working with Toyota. Sam has always been interested in making things with his hands on electronic products, as well as enjoying maths and science at school. Creative subjects were not Sam’s strengths and he decided not to do A levels or go to university as he enjoys being practical.
This led Sam to look for an apprenticeship as it involves learning on the job, to help him to stay focused and follow his dreams. He found an apprenticeship at Toyota doing what he is passionate about.
WorldSkills UK changed Sam’s life when he started to compete at the National finals. He learned so many different aspects that he can apply to himself personally on his own professional development, and learning that he could apply back to his apprenticeship. This also taught him technical skills, logical thinking and learnings he could take back to Toyota. Being a Champion at WorldSkills UK has opened up doors to his future by getting onto a degree programme.
WorldSkills UK has really changed my life. I’ve learned so many things from it that I can apply to myself about my own personal development and it’s taught me a lot of technical skills.
