Yasmin initially wanted to pursue a traditional art-based skill due to her background in traditional arts. However, she recognised the need to improve her computer skills, which she identified as a weaker area. This desire to enhance her digital capabilities led her to 3D Digital Game Art.
Yasmin got involved in WorldSkills through City of Glasgow College, where she first participated in class competitions. From there, she advanced to regional and WorldSkills UK national finals, marking her growth and dedication to her craft.
In her first national finals, Yasmin faced a challenge when her equipment broke, but she remained level-headed. With encouragement from her training managers, she competed again at the national finals in 2023 and placed first.
“Being selected means so much to me,” Yasmin shares. “This has been my world for so long, and I really appreciate being here and being part of the team.”
Her friends and family are incredibly proud of her accomplishments. Yasmin said, “They just can’t believe the scale of my success. Their pride and support are unwavering.”
Ahead of the competition in Lyon, Yasmin has been rigorously training both on her own and with her Training Manager. She had the opportunity to compete in a friendly competition in Australia, where she placed first. This intense experience was incredibly valuable for her preparation for Lyon.
“The toughest obstacle to overcome has been self-doubt,” Yasmin admits. “I have always been self-deprecating, but having belief in yourself is really important. Even just having the confidence to walk into a room is something I’ve definitely grown in.”
The competition has significantly helped Yasmin in her career. She gets a lot of time in the industry, working in a studio where she trains in Manchester. This has allowed her to network and meet many people in the industry, including Dan McCable, a former WorldSkills UK 3D Digital Art Competitor who has been very supportive and offered valuable advice.
When asked what she is most looking forward to, Yasmin said, “Just the experience. Being in an intense environment prepares me for a lot of future situations. Meeting other competitors from across the world who share the same passion for this skill is very inspiring.”
Yasmin wholeheartedly recommends WorldSkills UK to everyone. “At times, it can be hard work, and you have to give a lot to your skill, but if you want to push yourself and achieve, then definitely throw yourself into this opportunity.”
