Overview

This competition has been designed to reflect the role of an electrical technician and the standards that are expected within the electrotechnical industry.

Competitors are expected to install a range of electrical and lighting circuits and containment systems including PVC/ PVC surface clipping, plastic conduit, trunking and cables.

They will be assessed on; measuring accuracy (within 2mm), horizontal and vertical alignment, electrical terminations, functionality, planning and installation, fault finding containment symmetry, inspection and testing, safe working practices , including application of health and safety requirements, and other technical skills. In addition to core electrotechnical skills, an electrician’s role in low carbon installation will be embedded throughout the competition.

This competition is managed by NET and is also known as SkillELECTRIC.

 

The skills you need to demonstrate

  • Positioning of components in relation to technical plans

  • Installing lighting and power circuits

  • Inspection, testing, fault-finding and rectification of installations

  • Correct functioning of electrical circuitry

  • Compliance with BS 7671: IET Wiring Regulations

  • Interpreting drawings and installations details

Entry criteria

  • This is an individual competition
  • There is no limit to the number of registrations per organisation
  • Competitors must be familiar with the Core Competencies (these can be found in the ‘Useful resources’ section below)
  • Competitors should be either an electrotechnical apprentice or be working towards or have achieved their Level three technical qualification within the last 12 months

How it works

Registrations are now open and close midnight 28th March 2024.

The Entry Stage is an app-based, timed and interactive online task which will test the candidates’ electrotechnical knowledge. This is the first stage of the competition. It will take around an hour to complete. The entry stage will take place from 8-9 April

We recommend ahead of this stage that you take the following steps:

Pre-Competition

Use the Pre-Competition Guide to help you identify your most suitable candidate(s) to enter for SkillELECTRIC. Within the guide you’ll find:

  1. The Talent Spotting Checklist which defines the ideal personal attributes and other characteristic a competitor should have
  2. The Core Competencies that competitors are expected to meet at each stage of the SkillELECTRIC competition journey, starting from the Entry Stage through to world-class international standards

The Pre-Competition Task which can be used as an in-house competition from which you can identify your most suitable candidates to register for the SkillELECTRIC competition.

The entry stage will take place on the 8th & 9th of April.

A series of live competitions taking place across the UK. The top scoring competitors from the national qualifiers will progress onto the UK final.

  • Coleg Cambria, Friday 10 May
  • Burnley College, Wednesday and Thursday 15th & 16th May
  • South West College (Northern Ireland),  Tuesday 21st May
  • Eastleigh College, Wednesday 5th June
  • College of West Anglia, Wednesday 12th June
  • Perth College UHI, Wednesday 18th & 19th June
  • Nottingham College, Wednesday 26th June

Announcement of finalists

Scores are quality assured and Finalists are announced in July

To help finalists prepare ahead of the UK Final, we will provide relevant technical training and share mindset development techniques, to support them to remain focused on achieving success.

The Top 2 highest scoring at each qualifier and all UK fi­nalists will be invited to a prestigious industry event in London to celebrate their achievements.

The UK national finals are a week long event. It will involve 3 days of activity where the top competitors will be under competition conditions. Accommodation will be provided by NET.
